Betty Meyer Obituary

Betty Lou (Griffin) Meyer, 85, of Higganum, beloved Mom, Grams, Nana, Aunt Bet, Grandma Betty, passed away after a short illness surrounded by her loving family on Friday, August 13, 2021. She was born on August 3, 1936, along with her twin sister Barbara as the youngest of the ten, to the late Winfred Griffin and Jenny (Watrous) Griffin.  She graduated in June, 1954 from Morgan High School in Clinton.  On October 31, 1954, she married the love of her life, Bernard V. Meyer.  They moved to Hidden Lake in 1958 and made their home where they raised their family.  They were able to share 55 years together before his passing in 2009.

Betty worked for more than 25 years at the former Cheesebrough-Ponds in Clinton in various positions, before taking early retirement in 1991.  She loved watching her Hallmark channel shows and was very supportive of our active service members and veterans.  Betty was a very strong person of faith and as a member of her church, taught Sunday School, was worship committee leader, help to established the food bank, Red Bird missions, holiday food baskets for families in need and her homemade goodies were a staple for the weekly coffee hour.  In addition, her jams and jellies and hand-made items were always a highlight at the annual church fair. She was recently inducted into the Haddam-Killingworth Hall of Fame for all of her volunteer service.  She did not like the spotlight and so often she privately would be “taking care” of things for her neighbors, friends and family.  Grandma Betty had a gift of being encouraging, thoughtful and caring which is why she was adored and loved by all who knew her.

Betty’s family was first to her.  She was a devoted Mom and Grandmother who had an amazing love that touched each and everyone one in a special way and will be dearly missed.  She is survived by her four children, David of Higganum, Linda Mascaro and her husband Peter of Middletown, Malcolm and his wife Elisabeth of Haddam, Douglas and his fiancé Heidi of Higganum; her grandchildren, Shannon Zarger and her husband Stephen, Michael and his wife Lindsey Ravizza , Kelley Anne Meyer, Stephanie Buote and her husband James, Chanelese Meyer and her fiancé Andrew Norris, Joshua Meyer and his partner Kaleigh Griffith, Nathaniel Meyer, Bethany Meyer and her fiancé Nathaniel McCann, Skyler, Lillian, Matthew, Elizabet and Jacquelyn Meyer; Adam Mascaro and his wife Sheri; her great-grandchildren Paige and Lauren Zarger; Bradley, Logan and Mayelle Buote, Kit Ravizza-Meyer, Alivia and John Mascaro, Mason Mascaro and a great-grandson due in October; her special nieces Marilee, Gail, Wanda, Janice, Robin and Miranda, and many more nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her siblings, Doris Kelsey, Emily Slye, Winfred, Harry, Charles, Carl and Roger Griffin, Naomi Foley and her twin sister Barbara Bronke, who passed on the same day, 5 years earlier and grandson Peter Mascaro, Jr.  Burial will be private.  Per Betty’s request, in lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make memorial contributions to the Higganum United Methodist Church, PO Box 475, 248 Saybrook Road, Higganum, CT 06441.
